  • The Art of Drawing Nature 

    Study drawing techniques with Mairin Wilson at the Visual Arts Center (VAC).  Learn different drawing techniques and experiment with a variety of drawing mediums! This is a careful combination of theory and practice just right for those who are looking to embrace drawing as part of their artistic practice.

    Supplies: 
    Graphite 
    • Artist grade pencils H, HB, 2B, 4B, and 6B
    Erasers and Sharpening Supplies
    • Eraser Pen (Tombow Mono eraser recommended) 
    • Kneaded Eraser
    • Sandpaper paddle or sandpaper for sharpening
    • Utility Knife with snap-off blades (Olfa recommended) 
    Blending Tools 
    • Stumps: large and small (optional) 
    Charcoal
    • Vincharcoal - soft, medium, and hard (Winsor & Newton recommended) 
    • Charcoal Pencil - extra soft (6B), soft (4B), medium (2B), and hard (HB)
    •   General's white charcoal pencil 
    Paper
    Below are some recommended paper and sketchbooks. you DO NOT need to get all of these, but you will need at least one good drawing paper. 
    • Canson Cream is a good all-purpose drawing paper
    • Fabriano Artistico, Stonehenge or Strathmore Bristol are excellent drawing papers for graphite 
    • Strathmore 500 charcoal paper is a good traditional laid paper (light to medium value in a warm grey or neutral)
    • Strathmore Toned Tan in pads is good, toned paper for charcoal 
    • Stillman & Birn is also an excellent choice for a wire bound or hardbound sketchbook 
    • Watercolor paper - cold or hot pressed

The Visual Arts Center serves Charlotte County, and beyond, with three major galleries, 6 classrooms, jewelry, glass, pottery & fiber studios, Gift Shop, Art Supply Store, and VAC logo items. Our 12,000 square foot facility provides the best art classes, instructors and exhibit opportunities for the community. Our courses are designed for all ages and skill levels, and we offer classes and workshops in a variety of arts media throughout the year.
