What the Visual Arts Center found after Hurricane Ian, is that many of our students, instructors, and guests wanted and needed to get back to the arts to heal their minds dealing with the destruction around them. Our Art & The Human Brain program taught us that being in front of art for just 20 minutes is mentally and physically healing, taking an art class with others in a social atmosphere decreases the amount of loneliness we feel, and helps to lessen the effects of trauma, anxiety, PTSD, and more. The Visual Arts Center (VAC) offers youth art programs as part of our mission "To Inspire, Explore, Create, and Promote the Visual Arts". Youth can attend after school, Saturdays, and in our summer camp programs. These programs are open to all for a minimal fee or through our scholarships.
For many people in our area Hurricane Ian, Debby, Helene, and Milton created challenges to meeting the needs of our communities. The Visual Arts Center was not immune from these events. The VAC has faced over $200,000 in uninsured damage from storms over the past few years. Many families continue to rebuild even now from Ian in 2022-2023, and two of our own team members were either displaced or had major devastation to their homes and lost their vehicles going through both Helene and Milton in 2024.
The Visual Arts Center serves Punta Gorda, Charlotte County, and SW Florida with three major galleries, six classrooms, art instruction in all medias, national and regional exhibits, art focused events, gift shop, art supply store, art book cozy corner, lectures, workshops, summer camps for youth, and so much more.
