    Study Watercolor with Mairin Wilson at the Visual art Center (VAC)

     “Exploring the World of Watercolor” is a careful combination of theory and practice just right for the beginning watercolor artist. The easy-to-follow lessons are designed with step-by-step instruction and demonstration. Mairin will provide a drawing, a reference photo and a step-by-step guide for completing the painting. The step-by-step guide will be sent to your email for later reference.  There is also plenty of time for practice in class and at home.

    Here is what you will learn ...

           The basic materials, tools, and surfaces for painting with watercolors.

           Techniques that are unique to watercolor

           How to mix and apply values of a color to create the illusion of light and form.

           The process of transferring images.

           The basics of color theory and how to mix colors accurately.

           How to create texture.

           How to prevent and fix the “unhappy accidents.”

           The “alla prima” painting method.

           The “direct” method.

    Basic Watercolor Supplies:

    • Palette - inexpensive ceramic dishes or enamel butcher tray work well if you don't already have one 
    • Watercolor Paper - 100% cotton, 140 lb., cold press* 
      • Recommended Brands: Arches, Fabriano, Waterford, Hahne Muhle
    • Paints - if you don't have any, Mairin recommends Daniel Smith's Essentials Introductory set plus burnt umber or burnt sienna 
    • Brushes (minimum one medium round, one small round, one 1-2" flat) 
    • Paper towels
    • Backing Board is using loose paper
    • Artist's tape  

    Additional Supplies:

    • Pencil - H and B (ideally 2H & 2B)  
    • Ruler
    • Scrap watercolor paper
    • Eye dropper 
    • Spray bottle
    • "Magic" eraser (white foam, no soap) sponge   

    *We will be using 5 pieces of 8x10 paper and 1 piece of 10x10 paper plus extra for exercises. * 

    **It is recommended to buy 3 full sheets (22x30) of watercolor paper over a block. It will save you money. **
